Texas MVD Responds to WarOnDriving.com; No Clear Answers on License Plates

We’ve Been reporting on this blog for more than a week, that a key provision about penalties for driving in the state of Texas without a license plate displayed in 2012, no longer has any penality, which makes enforcement of the law impossible.

We sent out a twitter reminder to motorists living in or driving through that state, that this was the case.

Without any prompting, the Texas Motor Vehicle Department responded in kind to tell us we’re incorrect. You be the judge for yourself.

@TxDMV’s Final Response

As of 4 p.m. Central time on Jan 3rd, we’ve seen no further answers from either @TxDMV or @TxDOT on this major issue facing their ticketing/revenue raising traffic enforcement and penalty enforcement.

They’re definitely in a bit of a panic if they’re searching Twitter for anyone who is pointing the flaws in their admittedly complicated Transportation bill which was so long, that a key provision was omitted before it went to a final vote.

Will Texans begin to challenge this unenforceable law? You can bet that more than a few will.

TxDPS, be on notice that there’s no penalty for violating this law, so you’re potentially wasting a lot of time pulling people over who aren’t displaying their license plates.

#10 Texas legislature eliminates penalties for driving without a license plate.
This isn’t such a big story for 2011, but more of a teaser for 2012. When was the last time a state allowed motorists to travel through it without using a license plate?
Sure this was an accident and has politicians in Texas scrambling to find a way to reverse it, but it should make for some very interesting stories starting on Monday.

Texas Gaffe Means No License Plate = No Problem

Every motorist in Texas is now exempt from photo tickets from speed cameras, red light cameras and toll road enforcement cameras, starting January 1st, 2012.

Texas legislature left a key provision out of the latest version of their Transportation Omnibus Bill that penalizes drivers for not visibly displaying a license plate on their vehicle, reports TheNewspaper.com. [BILL]

Once this bill becomes law, it cannot be changed for two years because Texas Legislature only convenes every other year.

WarOnDriving.com writers, editors and affiliates do not condone dangerous driving or breaking traffic laws, however it is well within your right in the state of Texas to dismount your license plates from the outside of your vehicle and keep it somewhere inside, such as the cargo area.

This of course applies starting in 2012.

Not displaying your plate will ensure that you can’t be tracked and data mined by private corporations, Redflex Traffic Systems of Australia and American Traffic Solutions.

If you fancy your privacy, freedom from surveillance and exemption from proven fraudulent photo enforcement systems, which have been the subject of major class action and RICO lawsuits, 2012 is your chance to take some freedom back.

Go ahead Texas, take off that plate!
