The big one is coming. Los Angeles City Council will overwhelmingly vote to end the red light camera program…. this week!
The formalities are mind-numbing, but they’re going to come quickly this week after the inevitable was delayed by some lame-brained scheming courtesy of American Traffic Solutions CEO Jim Tuton.
They (ATS) even tossed around the idea that they would actually move from their cozy confines in complicit Scottsdale, AZ just to save this multi-million dollar contract. It’s not going to happen.
Today’s news in formality was that yet another commission voted unanimously to shut down and scrap the red light scam boxes in Los Angeles. One formality down, two more to go. By Wednesday, this thing should be a done deal.
MyFoxLA broke the story about the vote.
Los Angeles - A City Council Committee voted 5-0 today to phase out the city’s automated photo red light program, which issues $480 tickets to drivers photographed running red lights.
The city would stop issuing tickets generated by the cameras as of Sunday if the City Council passes the motion approved by the Budget and Finance Committee. However, the contract would not officially end until a future, to-be-determined date.
Councilman Paul Koretz said there are “20 good reasons” to scrap the program. At the top of his list is the fact that the Los Angeles County Superior Court has declined to enforce the tickets.
